Burning

Our native grasslands were once maintained by fire and herbivores. They limited tree growth and kept the grassland from becoming forest. Controlled burns are a tool that is still useful on both remnant and planted grasslands. It is, however, a tool that should be used with caution. Before attempting a controlled burn, get proper training. It is often available through government offices (NRCS, MDC, etc.). Many contractors also offer controlled burns as a service.
